Most of Cicero's letters were written in ink on paper or parchment with a reed pen; a few on tablets of wood or ivory covered with wax, the marks being cut with a stylus. The earlier letters he wrote with his own hand, the later were, except in rare cases, dictated to a secretary.

The most interesting letters are the ones toward the end where he muses on the fate of the Republic following Caesar's assassination, and where he is obviously concerned about his own safety as well. It is amazing that so many of these letters have survived; clearly many of Cicero's readers thought them worth preserving, which is an immeasurable boon to antiquarians like me. This collection encompasses Cicero’s correspondence with his family, friends, and acquaintances, spanning from the peak of his political career to the years leading up to his death. The letters provide an authentic portrait of Cicero, reflecting both his private and public life. Much of his correspondence was written in the moment—the writing style casual and the content personal. Other Cicero lived through some of the most turbulent years in the history of Rome and witnessed first-hand the overthrow of the republic and its replacement by the tyranny of Pompey, Caesar, Mark Antony, and Octavian. One of Rome's most memorable and keenly observant writers, his letters to friends and family are an astonishingly detailed record of daily life and politics in Rome.

The fifth and sixth volumes of Dr Shackleton Bailey's edition of the Atticus letters contain a revised version of the text first published in the Oxford Classical Texts in 1961. Problems of dating in this part of the correspondence are severe, and prolonged study of them has caused Dr Shackleton Bailey to depart on occasions from the traditional chronology.
